In the village of
almost all families
to a Książyk
Genealogy teams have achieved an outstanding work in Ukraine. In a few months time, they have sourced 364 documents of Książyk families. These documents record data before 1900 and they include 280 births, 51 deaths and 33 marriages. This genealogy research is a work in progess. We can only be grateful to Bozena Balaw who worked with much patience and dedication in the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw (Archiwum Główne Akt Dawnych).
The researches confirm that Książyk People were living in the hamlet of Boryczówka, near Trembowla, the main parish of the area, about 35 kilometers south of Ternopol. One Książyk is mentioned in Baworow (a hamlet nearby) and another Książyk is mentioned in Sokal (near Lwów).
Before WWII, Boryczówka was in Eastern Poland. 930 people were living there in 1900. During WWII, thousands Poles and Greek Catholic Ruthenians who considered themselves as Poles were massacred. Hundreds of thousands were expelled. In 1945, Poland lost all Eastern territories (Kresy). Boryczówka, now Боричі́вка, is located in Western Ukraine.
Considering that Książyk people were living in a very extensive family, naming rules were rather volatile. Frequently, the name of the mother “de domo” was added and sometimes this name was even used as the main family name. Therefore, records mention “Książyk” along with several family names (nazwisko) such as Golecki, Janiszewski, Kitajczyk, Kotkiewicz, Łukasiewicz, Mularczyk, or Paluch. To make it short, it seems that everybody in Boryczówka was more or less a Książyk.
The oldest record of Książyk People in Boryczówka is the christening of Pawel Książyk in 1774, son of Franciszek and Marianna. This event was recorded in Sokal. Other older documents date back 1826 and were recorded in Trembowla.
